You create.
TalePal assists.
Your AI writing companion and environment for VS Code.
Designed for novelists, storytellers, and creative writers.
Not a ghostwriter — a dialog partner. TalePal develops your story with you, surfacing the right context from your chapters, characters, and world at the right moment.
A complete writing environment — every mode in TalePal works on its own. Organize characters, build worlds, track plot lines, write your story — AI enhances your workflow when you want it, but your creative workspace stands on its own.
Built for writers, not workflows.
Four promises we hold to — so the AI stays a tool, not a stand-in.
Assists, doesn't write
TalePal is a dialog partner, not a ghostwriter. It develops ideas with you using the right context at the right time.
No monthly costs
Perpetual license. Run local AI for zero cost, or use Mistral's free tier for cloud. No subscriptions, ever.
Runs on your laptop
Runs with gemma-4-e4b locally on your laptop via LM Studio or Ollama. Your manuscript stays on your machine.
Open format, your data
Your manuscript is plain Markdown — files TalePal never touches outside your intent. Open them in any editor, keep writing without us. No lock-in.
A dialog partner that actually knows your story.
Intelligent analysis reads your manuscript and builds a living index — chapters, characters, plot threads, world. Smart context then surfaces the right slice of that knowledge for every question. That's why TalePal can talk meaningfully about your story, world, plot, and cast — not just the paragraph you happen to be on.
Six integrated modes
that work on their own — and are integrated together.
Story development
Prose, scenes, and dialogue — help with the chapter you're writing right now. TalePal reads the surrounding chapters so suggestions fit the voice you've already set.
Character development
Psychology, motivation, arcs. Character profiles live as files in your workspace — the AI carries them into every conversation.
Worldbuilding wiki
Places, factions, magic systems, rules of physics. An integrated wiki the AI reads before replying, so your world stays consistent across a long draft.
Plot & pacing
Track plot lines, notice where tension flattens, and spot the chapter where a subplot was quietly abandoned three acts ago.
Story analysis
Chapter summaries, character profiles, timeline events, and plot structure — extracted from your own prose, then fed back into every suggestion.
And much more
EPUB export, adjustable readability and grammar checks, a token usage dashboard (handy with cloud, fun with local), and a CSS-styled book preview you can theme to match your taste.
Think out loud. TalePal listens — knows your characters, your timeline, your world — a partner you can ask anything about your story.— The TalePal premise
Model-tuned, not model-agnostic. Prompts and context engineered per model, so your laptop and the cloud both land in the sweet spot.
Five views of the same manuscript.

Frequently asked.
Is TalePal a standalone app?
TalePal is a VS Code extension. VS Code is the most-used editor by software developers — you're on a bulletproof, widely-supported platform. And it's endlessly customizable: theming, scripting, plugins, all already there when you want them.
Does TalePal store data outside my computer?
No. Everything stays on your machine — we don't store your book or metadata on our servers. Pair TalePal with local AI (Ollama or LM Studio running gemma-4-e4b, say) and you're completely offline.
Note: when you use a cloud AI like Gemini or OpenAI, the context is sent to them as part of the request — check their terms, or switch to local for private work.
What format does TalePal use?
Plain Markdown. Every chapter, character, and note is a .md file you can open in anything. TalePal's own internal state lives in .talepal/ inside your workspace — on your machine, accessible to you. We hide it only to keep the UI uncluttered, not because it's locked away.
Which AI providers are supported?
Five providers, tuned per model. Default is the smaller tier of each; switch at any time.

Is my writing used to train AI?
Never by TalePal. If you use a cloud provider, their terms apply — we recommend local models for private work.
